In the UK we are restricted to 250W @ 15.5mph and I am ok with that, people here are so so dumb that they cant get that if the power and speed level is raised (many many people calling for that along with a throttle, but then its kind of a moped isnt it?) then for sure legislation will follow. Right now we pay no road tax, no compulsory insurance and not even required to wear a helmet but it wont stay that way if power is increased and assisted top speed goes up, I like things the way they are, we get a good deal right now and I hope it stays that way

My Aventon e-bike specifically warns against overnight charging. Not because of a risk of fire but simply so you don't over charge the battery. I think one way to mitigate any risk would be to have a spare battery that could be used while the other batter is charging during business hours. Of course, this assumes the battery is removable.

That's an important point - the China trade war started under Trump has continued under Biden. I'm all for made in America, but we need time to gracefully transition stuff back onshore - our national leadership doesn't seem to comprehend that. I'm very much concerned this will only _low_ overall quality. We already have issues with bad/cheap batteries causing fires as well as components not being sufficient for the type of riders that use them.

I do believe that bike shops selling or renting e-bikes that don’t conform to local laws should inform their customers about that. I pointed this out to my local bike shop when I purchased an e-MTN bike - but there is no place I can legally ride it within the city that take advantage of “mountain bike” aspect. AKA - all e-bikes are banned from single track. They confirmed that was true and they only knew of 18 trails out on public lands that e-bikes are allowed.

Class 2/3 thing was always weird. Technically, class 3 never included the throttle, but nearly all class 3 e-bikes have one in practice - so are they actually mopeds instead? I’m fine with the programmable aspect, it’s sorta like having a class 2 but not using your throttle to conform to class 1 operation. I’m fine with that, but I’m not modifying my bike to force it to class 1 just for 1 trail in my area.

My biggest concern over electric bicycles is the fire safety if you charge the batteries at home - in your house or garage. Are these Swytch batteries LFP or a chemistry which won't burn your house down if it's faulty?

I see a loy of people commenting about the government "smelling money" but this isn't a tax evaluation. The government already makes their money on these things sale. While over regulation or misinformed regulation can lead to all kinds of foolish restrictions, on the flip side, some of the opinions in your vid and here in the comments remind me of when I saw the crazy hatred people had for seatbelt implementation. Some industry standards for, like you mentioned, brake size would not be big bad evil government ruining the fun. And as far as rules for speeds, maybe we dont need govenors, but for those soon to come high speed ebikes - I hate to break it to you all but it wont be treated as a bike, at least not for long. Going over class 3 and regularly hitting 40+ mph, its going to be treated like a motorcycle/motor vehicle. And really, at that point, it should, you're really not a bike anymore.

Motorized Vehicles they are. But they use pedestrian and bicycle trails. There are enough rude, clumsy e-bikers to make me wish they would please stay on roads, as if they are motorcycles. Because they are electric Motor Cycles.

Frivolous and unfounded lawsuit. I can't remember the time I did NOT have that same lever/combo. Naturally, as a sensible rider (motorcycle, bicycle, and e-bike), I make sure they're safe to ride before each outing. Properly tightened wheels, good tire pressure (a huge one for me), and brakes in good working order are at the top of my priorities.

Looks pretty interesting. 40Nm seems about half of commercial ebikes but may be good enough for mostly flat travel. I really want it for a Linus Dutchi that I use for hauling a cargo trailer and wondering if it will be powerful enough. Thoughts?

You hit the nail on the head when it comes to limiting the power of an ebike. I am 70, have two messed up hips and have gained 60 pounds. I am getting an ebike for the exercise, and I know I need at least a 500 watt motor if not a 750. There is no "one size fits all in ebikes," and we don't put limits on hp in autos. thanks for the video.

i like little front hub motors for trikes for older folks , and newb bike riders . thy are great for rehabbing knees or cardio . Just enough power to enjoy and lower speeds for safety . Plus its All wheel drive ⚡

I got a Swytch kit with the air battery. I have had other e-bikes too. I do like that the air version is really light, and the small battery has enough range to get over 14-15 miles even with 600-700' of elevation on my commute. It charges fast enough that I can commute into the downtown area of my city, recharge while doing some work, and come home within a few hours. One unforeseen advantage is that I can climb a 15% grade that broke my other bikes' drive side spokes. I think that this is due to the front hub motor doing maybe half of the work as the rear wheel takes the rest of the load. So two wheels taking the load instead of one means less strain on the rear spokes. I live close to some very steep climbs, which is why I got an e-bike kit in the first place about 9 years ago.

The lever is on backwards. The quick release lever should never be placed on the same side as the brake disc.. This is a no brainer..

This is going to be very difficult to enforce.

This is why many newer mountain bike uses the Thru Axle design. Area 13 "Bolton" BlackBird ebike uses this design. I have a regular front hub motor with disc brake and the the nut gets loose over 200-300 miles of ride. With heavier load and hard riding, routine check is a good idea.

you don't charge your battery overnight.. SOMEONE'S supposed keep an eye on them while they're charging ..NOT a hard job .. if someone did their job. you would think that the authority on e bike safety would've been versed in the proper care and maintenance of these bikes .

I've been riding an Ebike since 2019. When I converted my two wheeled recumbent bike, to an Ebike. Two. The BMS or Battery Maintenance System, or BMS, is only rated for a charger of 2 amps. So that is all I use. Yes it takes over night to do such. But nothing heats up but the charger. So there is that. So this fire could have started due to a bad BMS system, or some one used the wrong charger on the bike, or the charger failed. Some one pointed out that Ebike batteries get hot during use. That depends on the type of motor the Ebike uses. Mine is a Magnetic Direct Drive system. So the battery does not heat up, the hub motor on my front wheel does. And I've charged my battery both inside and outside since August of 2019, with no issues. Also, depending on how the bikes where being ridden, was there any damage to the bike or battery before the fire. And did the space where all the Ebikes where stored and charged, have enough power to do the job? Too many questions, just to say, it was the Ebike Battery.

According to Google, automotive workers make up 1.3% of workers in the US (in 2022), that is about 4,364,800 workers. If enough people start ditching their cars in favor of E-bikes, then that's the automotive industry's ass. Personally, I think having more bikes, and more bike friendly cities would be awesome; more bikes could encourage more people to explore their neighborhoods and cities/towns, and more exploration might help out a lot of small business; and more bikes means less pollution. But on the flip side, even if more people started buying E-bikes, people still need cars. Parents might not feel comfy riding with their kids, or they might have too many people for taking an E-bike to make sense. When I started writing this comment, I was all "Big car doesn't want us to ride our bikes!" But now I see that it's a lot more complicated than that.

This is HB model 2, yeah the rim brakes there suck. HB model 3 has a much better drum brake on the front wheel that works just fine and you certainly wont flip over :D and even disc brakes work, I managed to modify my front wheel with a different hub (not sturmey archer) that works with disc brakes.

The provision that programmable e-bikes are still bikes makes a lot of sense to me. If you restrict your programmable more powerful bike to the legal limits, that's OK. That's how I read it. This is no legal advice, either. In my country, street legal e-bikes are limited to 600W and 25kph (which is a lot less than 20mph). I configure my controller to make it conform to these legal limits on public roads or public land. The motor is more capable than that. (On private property, with the owner's consent, I can exceed the street legal limits.) IMO that's OK, but if I got pulled over by a cop having a bad day, they could still give me a hard time. Because I couldn't refer them to §58 (or whatever it was) explicitly allowing it.

I've seen two of your videos, and they were both fantastic. I just ordered my first ebike (I'm a 63 year old lifelong (-10 yrs 😂) recreational bicyclist/ motorcyclist and have ordered my first ebike. I'm just trying to get my ass out of the house. I hope the government does as little as possible in this regard ofc, but, do they ever? Not in my lifetime.

The only thing I see with cars is that the government made it impossible for people to buy small trucks like the Ford ranger or look it up the manufacturers are not able to make them anymore so they have to make 6,000 lb vehicles that cost $90,000.

They are just trying to figure out some way of differentiating what should be licensed and what shouldn't. It's what governments do. Hey, they could have just said what's the difference between a gasoline engine and an electric motor and classed them as mopeds, with registration and liability insurance.
